Owned and managed by Stefano Oddi, Paolo's is a friendly, traditional Italian restaurant that has served diners for over 25 years. Ideal for a dinner for two, family meal or party, the menu features mouth-watering starters, pastas, fresh fish and a variety of meat courses complemented by wonderful Italian wines. There are also daily specials and an "al fresco" dining area. You may even experience the versatile and talented Stefano performing his extremely entertaining table magic. Paolo's is a popular venue with its loyal clientele and booking is seriously recommended.

PAOLO'S RISTORANTE
Walking into Paolo's on Hanger Green in Ealing (just a few minutes from Park Royal tube station) I found myself, just for a moment, back in holiday mode. With its tiled floor, brightly coloured pictures on the wall and air of relaxed informality, Paolo's looks and feels very much like an Italian restaurant in the Mediterranean - the sort of place where you would happily dine after a day relaxing in the sun.
Our waiter, Tony, was very friendly and welcoming and showed us to a table just by the pleasant al fresco dining area.
The menu boasts an excellent choice of dishes, whether you prefer traditional Italian fare or something a little different. From the 'Summer Specials' I began with fresh sparagus gratinati – the asparagus was perfectly firm and topped with a creamy cheese sauce that melted in my mouth. My companion opted for the avocado pear with smoked chicken - it was served with a tangy dressing and, for a starter, was a very generous portion.
For main courses we decided on the Saltimbocca Alla Romana (veal escalopes with parma ham, sage and white whine) - the veal was beautifully tender and the sauce suitably flavoursome - and Fracosta di Manzo Barolo (entrecote steak cooked in red wine and mushrooms). This was cooked to perfection and served in a rich sauce with a sharp bite.
From the impressive wine list, Tony recommended a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Bianchi 2004 (£14.50) -a good choice, it was light and refreshing and perfect for a balmy summer evening.
Whilst pondering whether we had sufficient space for the delicious-looking desserts, Stefano, Paolo's proprietor, entertained us with magic tricks. By the end of the evening he had somehow made my friend's diamond ring vanish, only to then appear inside his zipped wallet and attached to a key ring, and my credit card mysteriously appear in a sealed envelope.
Finally, giving in to temptation, we shared Strawberries Romanoff, which looked almost too good to eat (Tony kindly whipped up an extra large portion) and oranges in caramel sauce soaked in Grand Marnier - both a complete indulgence.
Paolo's is clearly a classic neighbourhood family restaurant. Over the last 25 years it has built up a devoted local clientele and Stefano's good-natured rapport with the diners (not to mention his amazing magic tricks) adds to a vibrant atmosphere.
The food is fresh and tasty and prices are reasonable - our meal with wine came to just over £50 - and we'll definitely be making the trip back to Ealing.
All in all, a magic night out!
