REVIEW IN WESTSIDE MAGAZINE
Walking into Paolo's on Hanger Green in Ealing (just a few minutes from Park Royal tube station) I found myself, just for a moment, back in holiday mode. With its tiled floor, brightly coloured pictures on the wall and air of relaxed informality, Paolo's looks and feels very much like an Italian restaurant in the Mediterranean - the sort of place where you would happily dine after a day relaxing in the sun.
Our waiter was very friendly and welcoming and showed us to a table just by the pleasant al fresco dining area.
The menu boasts an excellent choice of dishes, whether you prefer traditional Italian fare or something a little different. From the 'Summer Specials' I began with fresh sparagus gratinati the asparagus was perfectly firm and topped with a creamy cheese sauce that melted in my mouth. My companion opted for the avocado pear with smoked chicken - it was served with a tangy dressing and, for a starter, was a very generous portion.
For main courses we decided on the Saltimbocca Alla Romana (veal escalopes with parma ham, sage and white whine) - the veal was beautifully tender and the sauce suitably flavoursome - and Fracosta di Manzo Barolo (entrecote steak cooked in red wine and mushrooms). This was cooked to perfection and served in a rich sauce with a sharp bite.
From the impressive wine list, I was recommended a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Bianchi - a good choice, it was light and refreshing and perfect for a balmy summer evening.
Whilst pondering whether we had sufficient space for the delicious-looking desserts, Stefano, Paolo's proprietor, entertained us with magic tricks. By the end of the evening he had somehow made my friend's diamond ring vanish, only to then appear inside his zipped wallet and attached to a key ring, and my credit card mysteriously appear in a sealed envelope.
Finally, giving in to temptation, we shared Strawberries Romanoff, which looked almost too good to eat, and oranges in caramel sauce soaked in Grand Marnier - both a complete indulgence.
Paolo's is clearly a classic neighbourhood family restaurant. Over the last 25 years it has built up a devoted local clientele and Stefano's good-natured rapport with the diners (not to mention his amazing magic tricks) adds to a vibrant atmosphere.
The food is fresh and tasty and prices are reasonable - our meal with wine came to just over 60 - and we'll definitely be making the trip back to Ealing.
All in all, a magic night out!

Great restaurant. Stef runs it with enthusiasm. Good for family parties too!).
It's a special place for us as we decided to get married here, and returned for our anniversary.
Menu is pretty standard Italian dishes, all well-prepared and presented.
A new itemised billing system has been installed, so billing-related complaints here should now be resolved.
NB: Bookings are essential as it caters to a very loyal, local customer base.

Working in North West London, I am more than aware of the scarcity of decent restaurants.
Paulos is an oasis in a desert of unexceptional eateries.
I use it mainly lunchtimes (be aware this place can get very busy with local business men and women) but it is also well worth a visit in the evening where it can be quite a romantic location!
I won't recommend a dish as you can rely on them all, but they do a lovely white wine -Gavi de Gavi, well worth a try.

Had a pleasure of enjoying a truly delicious, expertly crafted Italian dishes on several occasions here. L' escargot (snails) were lovely, followed by truly excellent crumbed veal and properly roast rosemary potatoes. Friendly management, good service and often the place gets very busy with group guests.

Went there for my wife's birthday on a Saturday night. Excellent food and service, great atmosphere and cannot wait to go back again. Starters, main and dessert were all excellent and great value. All food was freshly cooked, served piping hot and nothing is too much trouble. Mussels were excellent as was asparagus starter. The fillet steak was the best steak ever according to my wife and my son and I went for the liver and bacon perfectly cooked. We had a bottle of house White and red, both very drinkable and great value. You really cannot go wrong at this restaurant. Highly recommended and you might be lucky and get a bit of magic at your table or a few jokes.

'An evening meal, we found the restaurant to be nicely decorated and comfortably arranged for a nice dinner setting. Service was very attentive and no issues in that area. Food was very good and well cooked. Outstanding bread and olives served to begin. Good wine choice and reasonably priced. Funny host with some good tricks. All in all very good.'
'We regularly go for lunch before a visit to Boden's clothes outlet across the road. The food is top class, atmosphere relaxed. And service faultless. It's always a treat and very reasonably priced too. Nothing comes close a real Italian treat.'
'Yet another wonderful visit to Paolo's with our American cousins, every time another branch of the Texan family visit, they all want to include a visit to Paolo's.....Cannot fault the service, food and ambience....and the magic conjured up by Stef. Love this place!'
'Visited this Ristorante recently with some work colleagues and found a very friendly host who entertained with some jokes and magic tricks. The restaurant was clean and tidy, food well served, plentiful and delicious and the staff were very attentive. Worth a visit if you're in the area.'
A great local Italian
I stay frequently at the Holiday Inn at Hanger Lane, and had despaired of finding a decent restaurant locally, but then I discovered Paolo's. It is just around the corner from the Park Royal tube station and about 10 minutes walk from the Holiday Inn, located in a side street. Run by real Italians the food was some of the best and most authentic I have experienced in a UK Italian restaurant. I had a avocado, green leaf and bacon salad as a starter, and an entrecote steak on a bed of rocket as a main course. Both looked delicious and the taste was just as good. The dessert, chocolate mousse cake was OK, but probably not homemade. Coffee was excellent and the white house wine very enjoyable. Cost for the above, with mineral water and 2 glasses of wine, including service came to about 35 pounds. I have to say that all the food I saw passing by my table looked wonderful. You can tell a lot about a restaurant from the way the treat a lone diner - some seem to resent giving up a precious table for just one person! I went on a Tuesday night and the place was a third full. Service was welcoming, efficient and attentive, reasonably friendly but not overbearing. This is an unpretentious, well run local Italian restaurant. A little gem in this area of London and highly recommended.
